Do You Know For Sure You Are Going To Heaven?

If you were to stand before God and He were to say to you why should I let you into my Heaven, what would you say?

Well, I’m not as bad as anyone else.  Actually, I’m a pretty good person, I guess.

So basically, you think you have kept the Ten Commandments?

Most of them.

Well, let’s see.  Have you ever told a lie?  Even a little “white lie”?

Of course.

Have you ever stolen anything?  Even something small like a pen?

Yes

The Bible says if you look at someone with lust you have committed adultery in your heart.  God doesn’t just look at your outward deeds but also the intention of your heart.  Have you looked at someone with lust?

Yes

Jesus said if you hate your brother you have committed murder in your heart.  Have you ever felt you just couldn’t stand someone or hated someone?

Yes.

Have you ever used God’s name in vain, like as a cuss word?

Yes.

That’s called blasphemy. That is so serious it was punishable by death in the Old Testament.

By your own admission you are a liar, a thief, an adulterer at heart, a murderer at heart and a blasphemer.  And that is just five of the Ten Commandments.  If God judges you by the Ten Commandments on Judgement Day do you think you’d go to Heaven or Hell?

I guess I’d go to Hell?

The Bible says that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.  We are all born with a sin nature.  It says there is none that does good, no not one. God is Holy and will not have sin around him.  In the Old Testament someone who sinned, even in ignorance, had to do a sacrifice for sin because whether he knew he sinned or not it is still a sin and in our sinful condition we cannot stand before our Holy God.  There is no way we can dwell in Heaven with Him.

So we are doomed?  But I’ve done a lot of good things, too.  Doesn’t that count?

Let’s see.  Suppose I took a trip to China and loved it so much I wanted to move there.  In fact, I decide to actually become Chinese.  So I pack up and move there and apply for citizenship. I learn to speak Chinese, learn to cook Chinese food, wear the current Chinese fashions, get my hair styled like the Chinese and even go so far as to get plastic surgery so I’ll look Oriental.  So now am I Chinese?

I would guess you are.

Not according to my DNA.  It verifies that on the inside I am a westerner, not oriental.   I may look and act Chinese on the outside but who I am on the inside is the real me.

It is the same with our sin nature.  We can do a lot of good things such as giving to charities, going to church, helping others.  But doing those outward deeds won’t change who we are on the inside, which is a sinner.  Just as doing all those things to become Chinese won’t change my DNA, trying to do good deeds won’t change my sinfulness, basically my spiritual DNA.   Trying to clean up our own self is like trying to clean a floor with an oily rag.  It won’t work. The Bible says all our good deeds are as filthy rags.   Only God can change who we are on the inside.

I didn’t realize how serious my sin was.  But I thought God is love.

He is.  In fact, there is a verse in the Bible that says God is love.  But the Bible also says He is fair and just and must punish sin.  He won’t let the quilty go unpunished and we are all guilty.

It sounds more and more like we are all doomed.

The Good News is God loves us so much that he did something to rescue us from our sin and make a way for us to be able to have fellowship with Him and dwell with Him forever.

He came down to earth Himself to live the perfect life for us that we are uncapable of doing ourselves.  Jesus was 100% man and 100% God and He never sinned.  Yet He took the punishment we deserve for our sin (death) on the cross.  All the wrath of God for our sin was poured out on Jesus.  When Jesus died, He then rose from the dead and conquered death on our behalf.

We must trust that Jesus paid for our sins completely on the cross.  When we realize our sinful condition, that we are doomed like you put it, and repent (turn from our sin and what we’ve been trusting in to get to Heaven) then God will give us a clean heart and look at us as if we never sinned.  We will be clean and able to stand before God and dwell in Heaven with Him forever.

That is Good News!

One thing I want to mention.  If you are just looking for a “get out of Hell ticket” then that is not salvation.  Like I mentioned before, God looks at our heart.  Do we see Him as an all-powerful God who created us and has the right to punish or reward us as He deems right?  Do we realize the significance of our sin?  That we have been willfully disobedient to His Word and will?

When you truly see your sinful condition as God sees it your attitude will be to fall on your knees in prayer and ask the Lord for forgiveness and have a desire to follow Him all the days of your life. When you do that the Bible says Jesus saves you and gives you eternal life.

Salvation is repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

I see, now, my need for forgiveness.  I am going to go and talk to God now about my sins.

I pray you will put your faith totally in Jesus and I will see you someday in Heaven.  God Bless.
